Pro Snowboarders Compete Over a World’s First “House Jump” at Mount Buller, Victoria

Team Quiksilver took out the honours and $12,000 in prize money in this weekend’s Mt Dew Battle For Supremacy on a specially built snow course that included a purpose built house on Bourke Street at Mount Buller Alpine Resort.

The “Dew Hut” as it was coined, is the world’s first ride-able house and was the main feature of the slopestyle snowboard course that snowboarders jumped and slid over in a bid to win part of the $15,000 cash prize purse in what was the country’s richest yet Australian jib contest.

The thousand strong crowd braved snowy weather to watch Quiksilver’s pro team of Nathan Perry (Sydney) and 15-year old Tim Laidlaw (Melbourne) won the hotly contested event with smooth consistent riding that included a one-foot jumps and 540 degree spins over the entire house.

Head Judge from the TTR World Snowboard Tour Mel Simmons said, “Quiksilver easily took the overall win by consistently landing their incredible runs together, where as a lot of other teams, although they were doing amazing tricks, was rare for both riders to land a run clean at the same time”.

Nathan Perry (Quiksilver) was easily the most stoked person on the mountain at the prize giving, while his young teammate Tim Laidlaw looked a little shocked coming to terms with having a $6000 cheque in his hands. Some of the tricks from Quiksilver included a huge one-foot air by Tim Laidlaw over the house and Nathan Perry stomping a massive 50-50 to backside 180 gap from the roof-top box rail.

Best Team Trick went to Team Burton (Jye Kearney and Tom Pelley) who teamed up on the apex of the roof of the house to send 16 year old Jindabyne local Jye Kearney into a huge backflip 25-foot to the landing using 20-year old Sydney-sider Pelley’s board as a take-off.

Course designer Russell Holt and editor of Transfer Snowboard Magazine said, “We really wanted to bring something unique to Mount Buller and snowboarding in Australia. We also wanted to give the pros a challenge in building the world’s first snowboard-able house. It was a bit of a risk but with the talent of the Mt Buller park builders and groomers it worked out amazingly well and the pros really stepped up to give the spectators a great show that pushed snowboarding to new heights.”

Hut Set-up and course build at Mt Buller

July 30, 2009

Well the event is now only two days away and the crew has been up on the mountain at Mt Buller, Victoria for the last 3 days building the Mt Dew Hut on Bourke Street.
To see the hut in place on the main run (Bourke Street) of Mt Buller really now puts it into perspective – the hut is absolutely huge and all the local riders and pros in town already are getting a few sessions in here and there to help the Mt Buller Park crew refine the set-up and park build.
On Wednesday Local pro and DC Team rider Mikey Williams stepped up to guinea pig the hut first. The jump wasn’t even finished but he was keen to give it a crack and the park crew were all too happy to give him a tow-in on the sled to give him enough speed to hit the roof and gap from the up side of the roof to the landing 40-feet away.

First hit Mikey stomped a straight air perfect on the tranny doing about 40km/h and then stepped to a massive backside 180-gap before coming unstuck on a frontside 180.
Later that afternoon/evening the 3CS Pro-team, Gus StLeon and Jason Currie along with Quiksilver rider Nathan Perry joined in on a session to test the speed on the jumps the cats had finished putting up that afternoon. The boys started gaping the entire roof on a big jump the groomer had set-up on the left of the take-off, dropping some backside 180’s and frontside spins. Everytime they would drop in all the punters on Bourke street would be screaming and freaking out – it is a crazy sight to see someone jumping and jibbing the Dew hut. It’s like The Man From Snowy River without the horse, Aussie as!

The Dew Hut will be the main obstacle on the 4 obstacle course that the 10 invited pro-teams will be battling on for the $15 grand in cold hard cash this Saturday night. Starting at 6pm the event will run for over an hour and be a ground-breaking jib-event on Australian soil. Tricks are going to get thrown down hard as the riders push the limits of what’s possible to try and take the money and the team crown. The hut is built to allow not only big gnarly moves, but also technical rail tricks.

Practice for the event will be on tomorrow – Friday (31st of July) from 2pm -5pm where all teams (20 riders) will be shredding this hut apart getting ready for the main event. It will most likely be a great show, so if you’re around come and check it out as well. We’ll be posting some photos tomorrow night on the blog from the session.
Don’t forget the FREE gig and party with live act headlined by Australian Hip-hop legend PEZ at the Moosehead Bar up at Mt Buller.
